  Spandau Ballet in Concert

Spandau Ballet is one of the most successful bands of the 1980s. The band has made the Top Ten with its singles and albums many times. In 1990 the group split up due to fights between the leader, Gary Kemp, and the rest of the band. At the beginning of 2009 the five band members, Tony Hadley, Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Steve Normane and John Keeble got back together for a reunion tour called "Reformation". In the beginning Spandau Ballet took inspiration from a mix of Funk and Synthpop, then they changed to a New Romantic group, and they eventually took on an elegant and refined pop style. The most successful singles were True, Gold, Only When You Leave, To Cut a Long Story Short and Chant No 1 (I Don´ t Need This Pressure On). Fans of the 80s will be able to once again hear the greatest hits by Spandau Ballet, who have reunited after almost 20 years, at the Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence. Informations and tickets Nelson Mandela Forum V.le Paoli, 3 50137 Firenze (FI) tel. +39 055 678841

How the British manage changes of government - Robin Butler

In Britain a change of government happens within twenty-four hours of a General Election; in the United States the process takes more than two months. Lord Butler, who was Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service in 1997 when the last such change took place in Britain, describes what happens behind the scenes and compares the strengths and weaknesses of the UK and US systems. Lord Butler served as Private Secretary to five successive Prime Ministers, chaired the enquiry into the use of intelligence in the lead-up to the Iraq war, and was Master of University College Oxford following his retirement from the Civil Service.

  Korean Film Festival of Florence

Since 2003, in late March every year, the city of Florence has become a showcase for South Korean cinema. This is a nation with one of the most active and prolific cinema industries on the planet, so it is only fitting that this event be hosted by a city steeped in culture. Here in Tuscany you will see the works of, and meet, the leading figures of the Korean movie world. Alongside the screenings and red carpet there will be a number of activities and events to keep you busy. Every year the festival chooses a director and organises a retrospective (Kim Ki-Duk and Park Chan-Wook were the two previous choices).

  Pitti - TASTE

The great event returns with Italian and international high gastronomy. With an attendance of 8,000 at the last edition and over 170 exhibitors, this taste and idea show is a reference for Italian and international operators in the sector. Taste was conceived by Davide Paolini (Radio24´s “Gastronaut”) and is organized by Pitti Immagine; Florence´s Leopolda Station will be the backdrop for this itinerary of tastings, discoveries and purchases of excellent gastronomic products from all over Italy. But the pleasures of wine and food are not Taste´s only focus. In fact, the show is also a place for cultural-gastronomic debate. The previous edition featured discussions (Taste Ring) of the trends and styles of the new culture of taste, exhibits of creative craft and design objects (Taste Tools) and, finally, an area dedicated to publishing and documentation. So, there are all the ingredients for imagining a similarly engaging 2010 edition. In addition, during Taste´s last week, there will be various collateral events (the "Out of Taste Events") that will transform Florence into the city of taste.

Martino Traxler Is repatriation of art always the moral choice?

Martino Traxler Repatriation is widely regarded as the correct moral answer in dealing with ancient objects, particularly those of undocumented provenance, such as the celebrated Euphronios Krater. Recently, however, international objections have been advanced to repatriation. Martino Traxler reviews this debate, considers the value of art objects from our cultural and historical perspective and looks at the nineteenth-century Italian discussion on these matters (starting with Canova´s efforts to effect the return of paintings and sculptures taken by Napoleon for the Louvre). Martino Traxler has a B.A. and a Ph.D. in philosophy, and teaches for several junior-year abroad programmes in Florence.

The Dog of Hearts: poetry in the heart of Europe

Poet Michael March says: ‘Without poetry - there would be chaos. “Art knows nothing of History, but helps itself to its terror.” The oedipal complex - versus the military-industrial complex- sucking on the milk-tooth of appearance - which apparently does violence to the truth. Fortunately, poets are the bloodhounds of the spirit- unfolding truth- from the lunatics who appear as the elected masters of words.’ Michael March is President of the Prague Writers Festival and professor of poetry at New York University in Prague.

De Chirico, Max Ernst, Magritte, and Balthus. Glance into the invisible.

Palazzo Strozzi will host an exhibition to celebrate the masterpieces of the father of metaphysical painting, Giorgio de Chirico, and of its perception of life after reading some works by philosopher and writer Friedrich Nietzsche. Isolation, a sense of abandonment, alienation, anxiety and despair are just a few of the feelings that De Chirico is capable to convey, allowing them to powerfully emerge through his works. Others have confronted and identified with this artist´s vision of the world, such as Belgian painter René Magritte, a leading representative of surrealism, and French painter Balthus, who, although initially inspired by pre-renaissance art, infuses his works with frequent elements of De Chirico´s metaphysical perception. Other works will also be exhibited at Palazzo Strozzi, such as those by Marx Erns, Carlo Carrà and Giorgio Morandi, all artists who were inspired by De Chirico´s experience. The primary goal of this exhibition is exactly that: to find any common themes, similar subjects and insights between the works of different artists. De Chirico´s poetics, which is appropriately considered the expression of that state of mind that characterized an entire century acts as the common thread between all the works in the exhibition.
